what is jailbreak?

Jailbreaking is basically modifying the iPhone's firmware so that you can get access to the internals of its operating system and install a whole slew of third-party applications on your iPhone that are not otherwise available through official channels (ie, the App Store).
Jailbreaking your iPhone in and of itself doesn't normally make much difference in your operation of it, but it does allow you to install other third-party applications that are not blessed by Apple.

This is a double-edged sword, however..... The upside is that there are some useful and interesting applications available through unofficial channels that will likely never appear on the App Store due to SDK restrictions. For example, Apple's official position is that applications are not permitted to continue to run in the background on the iPhone. This restriction is not because the iPhone can'trun apps in the background, but merely because Apple did not want developers doing this. Further, applications the hack or extend the functionality of built-in iPhone apps like Mail and Safari and the phone app are not permitted by the SDK, yet unofficial apps have no such restrictions.

The downside to this approach is that although there are some brilliant developers out there in the jailbreak community, these folks are all flying by the seat of their pants when it comes to writing these apps..... They have no official support from Apple, and are building most of these apps by reverse-engineering the existing iPhone OS and built-in applications to figure out how things work so they can build their own apps.

This means that the quality of many of these jailbreak apps, particularly those that act as system extensions, is extremely dubious. They're doing things the iPhone may not have been designed to do, and certainly doing them without any official blessing from Apple.

How to jailbreak iOS 5.1 with Redsn0w 0.9.10b6

iOS 5.1 has finally dropped, and for the most part we totally recommend staying away from the update if you care anything about your jailbreak, as does the iPhone Dev Team.

That being said, for those with older A4 devices, it is possible to enjoy a tethered jailbreak on iOS 5.1 and still downgrade back to previous firmwares if you have your SHSH blobs for those firmwares.
With A5 deviceslike the iPad 2, and the iPhone 4S, it is impossible at the moment to downgrade to any older iOS 5.x firmware, even if you have your SHSH blobs saved. So don’t upgrade to 5.1, especially if you care about your iPhone 4S jailbreak.

If you have an iPhone 4, iPod touch, iPhone 3GS, or original iPad, then check inside for a tutorial on how to perform a tethered jailbreak on iOS 5.1…

NOW HOW TO JAILBREAK 5.1

Step 1: Download RedSn0w 0.9.10b6 from our downloads page and run it.

Step 2: Place your iPhone 4, or iPod touch, etc. into DFU mode.

Step 3: Click jailbreak on RedSnow, and it will go through the process of finding the necessary firmware. It will then ask you to install Cydia, make sure that is selected and click next.

Step 4: You should see a lot of scrolling text on your device, and eventually you will be back to your Home screen. You will see a Cydia icon but it will be white. That is because you have to perform a tethered boot.

Step 5: Place your iPhone 4, or iPod touch, etc. back into DFU mode.

Step 6: Click back on redSn0w and select Just boot. This will perform a tethered boot, and once your device returns to its Home screen, you will see a usable Cydia app icon. Open Cydia, and enjoy your jailbreak.

Note: Each time you reboot your device, you will have to perform steps 5 and 6 again to perform a tethered boot.

Does it Cost Anything to Jailbreak?

No. You should never pay for jailbreaking.
Hackers that develop jailbreaks do it for free, sometimes (rarely) asking for donations. Some people may charge you to jailbreak your iOS device for you. If it makes you feel better to pay someone, you can do that, but why pay when you can do it yourself for free?

Is Jailbreaking the Same as Unlocking?

No, jailbreaking and unlocking are two different things. To unlock your iPhone, you usually have to jailbreak first. As noted previously, jailbreaking an iPhone lets you install third party applications and mods, while unlocking allows you to use your iPhone on a different carrier.
To learn more see the different between Jailbreak and unlock

What are the Benefits of Jailbreaking?

The main reason why you’d want to jailbreak is to have the ability to install third party applications and tweaks that Apple doesn’t or wouldn’t approve in the App Store. There are tons of applications that don’t meet Apple standards and do things that Apple doesn’t want you to do on your iOS device for various reasons.
For example, Apple doesn’t allow you to customize your iPhone by changing app icons or the general user interface of your device. Thanks to the jailbreak community, there are several ways to completely change the way your iPhone looks, WinterBoard being the most popular one.
Besides applications, jailbreaking also gives you access to tweaks, mods, and extensions. These not exactly considered applications. They bring subtle improvements to the way your iOS device operates. For instance, Five Icon Switcher is a tweak that lets you have 5 icons in the iPhone app switcher at once, instead of the default 4.
A lot of people jailbreak their iOS device in order to unlock it to work on a different carrier. When you want to unlock your iPhone, the first step is to jailbreak it to then run and run software that will let you have other carriers work on your iPhone.

Is Jailbreaking Legal?

Jailbreaking is completely legal, at least here in the US. For a long time, jailbreaking was considered illegal by the US government based on copyright litigation. In July of 2010, the US government passed a rule that made Jailbreaking legal
There is nothing to worry about. Even if you don’t live in the US, there’s a very slim chance that Apple would sue you because you jailbroke your iPhone. It hasn’t happened yet, and people all over the world have been jailbreaking since 2007.

Is Jailbreaking Easy ?

Yes, it is but you have to carefully read the instruction. These days, jailbreaking is very easy. Usually, you just need to download a piece of software, plug your iOS device into your computer, and run the software. There is no specific knowledge or skills required.

Does Jailbreaking Void my Warranty?

Yes and no. Yes, because if you go to the Apple store and show your jailbroken iPhone to an Apple employee, you will be told that you can’t receive customer support because you voided your warranty the minute you jailbroke. Apple of course acknowledges the US government’s DMCA exception ruling that makes jailbreak legal, but that doesn’t mean that Apple has to allow jailbreak in its customer agreement.

Apple Support Article :

“Apple strongly cautions against installing any software that hacks the iOS. It is also important to note that unauthorized modification of the iOS is a violation of the iPhone end-user license agreement and because of this, Apple may deny service for an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch that has installed any unauthorized software.”

If you really have to take your iOS device to an Apple store, you can always restore it to its factory settings in iTunes. This will bring your iOS device back to the way it was when you first bought it, and Apple will have no way of telling that you ever jailbroke.
Many people have taken previously jailbroken devices to Apple several times before that were restored beforehand. Apple is usually not able to tell will provide full and normal customer support.

Can I Brick My iPhone if I Jailbreak?

You might have heard a few horror stories about people who tried to jailbreak their iPhone and ended up turning it into a brick. While this could have happened in the early days of the iPhone, this is now completely impossible.
The worst thing that could happen when trying to jailbreak is that it might get stuck and become unresponsive, in which case some people may automatically think that there’s no hope. You’re always able to restore your iOS device’s firmware back to the stock version.

Will Jailbreaking Prevent Me from Updating iOS?

If your iOS device is jailbroken and you decide to update it to the latest version of iOS, doing so will overwrite the jailbreak and restore your device to its factory settings. This might not be a big problem for most people, but it can become an issue for people who rely a lot of jailbreak apps and tweaks.
Every time Apple releases a new iOS update, hackers generally aren’t too far behind with an update for the tools that let you jailbreak. When a new iOS version and accompanying jailbreak are released, the preferred method is to backup your device first, update to the latest iOS version, and jailbreak again using one of the updated tools.
It’s important to note that it sometimes takes a while for hackers to develop a jailbreak following an iOS update, which is why we usually recommend jailbreakers to hold off on updating when a new iOS version is made available.

Is there a different Jailbreak process between iphone (3g, 3gs, 4, 4s) and iphone 5 ?

Difference between thethered and unthethered Jailbreak?

Till now you have only read the difference between tethered & untethered jailbreak that in tethered jailbreak we have to install jailbreak software again when iDevice is rebooted and in untethered jailbreak there is no need to connect to computer when iDevice is rebooted i.e in untethered jailbreak iDevices can be rebooted safely but not in tethered jailbreak .In my today’s article I am going to give an insdie difference between tethered & untethered jailbreak.
Apples’s iOS is basically made up of different layers. The lowermost layer is called iBoot. All the layers in iOS is bounded with chain of trust. There is iBoot code in iBoot layer that governs each and every iDevice that runs with the help of processor chip. The iBoot code is responsible for initiating boot sequence. Now, when any software in installed in iDevice, the boot sequence technology initiated by iBoot checks the built in signature at the time of booting. It verifies if the installed software in the iDevice is genuine/signed
or not.
This verification is done in every layers of iOS, thus signature check is done every level of iOS. This check verifies that only and only signed or genuine applications can be installed in iDevices.
Now, jailbreak softwares uses a loophole in the process of signature checking. This jailbreak software forces iOS to install third party application in iDevices by injecting some lines of codes. This jailbreak software bypasses all the security checks in different levels of layers. Now, the jailbreak software finds the loophole at the start i.e at iBoot layer so that the signature check does not occur in other layers of iOS.
